Hey everyone, this is Mindy posting tonight. Derrick fell asleep before he got a chance to update the blog, and I was sure everyone would like an update. Derrick had a pretty good day today. He finished up radiation today, so phase one is done! The only bad part about it is the radiation treatments were his only reprieve from being stuck in the room. He will no longer leave his room until discharge, this is done to prevent infections. His white blood cell count has started to drop, which is good because it means the radiation worked. Derrick felt pretty good most of the day today, and he was awake more than he has been for the past couple days. The nausea still bothered him and it has really taken a toll on his appetitite. But he was able to eat cereal and some mashed potatoes for dinner. Here at Sloan they have an Integrative Medecine program which offers services like massages, reflexology, reiki, and music therapy to name a few. Yesterday Derrick received a 20 minute massage targeted at his feet aimed to reduce the nausea. Today a man from music therapy came and sang and played the guitar. Jim, Donna, and Marcy arrived here safely today and I know Derrick was really happy to see them. The plan is that Derrick will start chemotherapy tomorrow. He will have the same chemo for two days and then will switch to a different kind for two more days. The chemo that he is getting is pretty much as strong as it gets. This is given to wipe out his bone marrow so it doesn't compete with the new stem cells, and to wipe out any residual leukemia playing hide and seek somewhere in his body. Once again we all can't say thank you enough for the prayers and support that we have received. Please keep lifting Derrick up in prayer!
Commit everything you do to the Lord. Trust him to help you do it, and he will.
